The Finishing Touches

I finally finished making headbands for my sister's quidditch team last night. I added names to the headbands by cross-stitching letters onto ribbed knitted headbands:

Not going to lie, it was difficult finding a way to make the letters look uniform on a ribbed pattern. I free-styled the letters too, but with input from my sister I was able to beautifully cross-stitch the letters. Above, you can clearly see the R (which was my most poorly done letter) and the F.


That's all the headbands I'm going to make for the fundraiser, folks! I can promise more fundraisers in the future because I think it's such a fun way to invest my time.

Quidditch Headband Fundraiser Update

Gather 'round ya'll. It's high time for another headband update!

So my sister visited last weekend and she gave me some great feedback! The headbands I have made so far are pretty thick and are intended to be worn in cold weather. But she suggested that I make thinner headbands for players that live in hotter areas. INGENIOUS!

I quickly got to work:

I added the larger headbands for comparision. These smaller bands are more close in size to the Nike headbands usually worn by athletes. Something about handmade pieces increase the value of the piece exponentially. Not only do these pieces look nice, but you don't have to pay a fortune to get a custom-made band.  :]


These are just a few of the bands I have made resting ever so peacefully in a shoebox. I still have to add embellishments (which will most likely be on the knitted headbands) and weave in the ends of my knitted headbands. I'll get to work on that starting Monday. For now, I am trying to make as many headbands as possible.

Made my seeker headbands yesterday. They are glorious. And quite yellow.

Quidditch Headband Fundraiser Update

The quidditch headbands are coming along nicely. After three weeks I have made 18 headbands. This is less than one per day, so I'll try to produce more at a faster rate in the upcoming weeks.

I've experimented most with the white headbands. Bands on the left are crocheted (looking pretty and cute), while the bands on the right are knitted, less cute, elastic and more ideal for a sport headband.

I thought of making a unisex crocheted headband for each position and I settled on these cool simple designs.

For now I'll continue to make more of the unisex headbands. I'll start on the seeker headbands on Sunday.

Soon to come are custom headband embellishments!

Cabled headband

I just finished my cabled headband. Doesn't it look marvelous? The cable is made with double crochets, so the headband feels a little tighter than normal. For my next cabled headband I'll use treble crochets and see if the headband feels more comfortable for those with larger heads than mine (I have a pretty small head).

Black Crocheted Quidditch Headband

I am trying the same concept in black, but this time adding two thin stripes.

I'm liking this headband already! Next step is to try a centered cable and maybe even a diamond pattern. This is too fun. I'll keep the posts coming!

Finished Green Fpdc Bpdc Headband

 

I really like how this headband came out. The thick stripe in the middle makes the headband more visually appealling. And a huuuuge plus: it took a couple short hours to make. I will definitely be making more headbands like this and will most likely change the pattern of the stripes.

Quidditch Headband Thoughts

So here's the thing. I crocheted all dc on my 76 chain loop. The headband looks nice...

...but I don't think this headband has the ideal elasticity. It fits my head nicely when I am stationary, but when I move the headband will slip down my face. I want to make sure the headband won't slip off a Quidditch player's head, especially when the player enters beast mode. So after finishing the above headband, I thought up this cool pattern design:

I will be crocheting it widthwise and will connect the ends once the piece is long enough. The fpdc and bpdc make a nice looking thick textured stripe in the middle. I can't wait to see what it will look like finished!

Curious to see what the headbands look like? Wait no longer!

A few notes:
Knitting headbands takes about 1-2 hours longer to make than crocheting headbands. So if I crochet more headbands I will make more headbands!

These crocheted headbands are airy since I repeated (sk 1 stitch, sc, ch1). I will make some crocheted headbands with double crochets in every stitch and see how that turns out.

The ribbed headband has more elasticity than the green alternate ribbed headband. This is useful because I don't know head circumferences of my recipients. The green headband is large and doesn't have much stretch, which, I think, would be more ideal for a guy to wear. I will make more ribbed headbands to ensure a universal size.

Finally finished my first headband and have moved onto the second!

Hope you don't mind kittybomb (Pablo). The black headband was knitted (ribbed with some cable) and the white headband is currently being crocheted.

Both of these headbands are made for girls. I'm thinking guys will want simple-patterned pieces so I'll see what I come up with after finishing this white headband.

Quidditch Headband Fundraiser Update

Alright everyone. Get ready because I just bought 3.5 pounds of yarn from Michaels. World Cup is a month and a half away and my goal is to make infinity headbands. My body is ready.


The random tomato is an attempt to provide some kind of visual gauge. Basically, the 1 lb skeins are over a foot long.

USC Quidditch World Cup 2013 Headband Fundraiser

I can't be more excited about my fundraiser to help USC Quidditch get to World Cup this year!

USC Quidditch team

Don't know about the new competitive full-contact sport called Quidditch? Yes, it's almost exactly what you think it is. Players run around with a broom between their legs during gameplay in one of the positions first described by none other than J.K. Rowling, herself. There are keepers, seekers, chasers, beaters, and snitches. Players designate their positions by wearing a certain colored headband.

Blue team: Arizona Wildcats, Red team: Utah Crimson Fliers

White headbands for chasers, green headbands for keepers, black headband for beaters, and yellow headbands for seekers (and snitches). This picture is good because it shows all player positions in the same frame!

Starting on this project asap. My mind is already racing, trying to determine how to best produce these headbands. For starters, I'll try making four different styles of headbands (knit and crochet for men, knit and crochet for women). And I'm pretty sure I'll have to make at least one headband everyday. These babies are in high demand. After attending a few Quidditch tournaments, I know how easily players can lose beloved headbands.
